I have photographed this big ram for the past four years. This is one of the first photographs that I took of him. He has survived wolves, cougars, hunters and disease. He is getting older each time I see him. Sheep wear their teeth out eating dry, coarse grasses for much of the year. They seldom live more than 14 or 15 years.

This ram is one of the four largest rams I have ever had the privilege of photographing. This ram and three others in this gallery are some of the largest bighorns in North America. They live where there are wolves, grizzly bears cougars and numerous other predators. They thrive because they don't have to compete with domestic livestock and hunting is restricted. We need more areas like this!

IMG_4178 BIG Horns

This back view of a huge ram shows the growth rings on each horn. These rings form each winter when the horns stop growing during the rut. You can tell a ram's age by counting these rings. The horns are not shed like deer antlers, but grow thoughout the ram's life.

This huge ram holds his head at an angle. I have photographed this ram over three separate seasons and he always holds his head this way. He may have injured his neck in a battle with other rams.

This ram has a large crack in his right horn. When Bighorn Rams fight, they may break a horn completely off. The next time I saw this ram, he had broken off the portion of the horn below the crack.

Two rams show off their impressive horns. Big rams like this are sought after by hunters,wildlife watchers and photographers.

This ram's horns are more than a full curl. Rams very often break off the tips of their horns before the get this large.

This huge ram poses for his portrait. Rams like this are very valuable. Sheep Hunters will pay up to a quarter of a million dollars for a permit to hunt a ram this big. This photo was a semi-finalist for the BBC Wildlife Photographer of The Year.

Thick forests are harmful to bighorn sheep. They need wide open areas for grazing and for observing predators. Rams will nibble off small trees and butt the trunks of larger ones to keep their habitat open. Forest fires are helpful to bighorns, in that fires create more open space.

A huge ram shows off his magestic horns. Thes monarchs of the mountains very seldom get this large. They are sought out by hunters who shoot them for trophies. I prefer to shoot them with my camera.

This big ram tells me by his stare, that I'm too close. I respond to signals like this and back off. Bighorns communicate with each other by body language. By paying attention and respecting their signals, I can get close without stressing these amazing animals.

IMG_6763 Grass Is Essential

Bighorns get big by consuming lots of grass. Grasses and other low growing plants make up most of their diet. Overgrazing by livestock has greatly reduced historic populations of the incredible animals. Over use of bighorn winter ranges by domestic cows and sheep leave very little grass for Bighorns to eat during the long winter months.

IMG_7221 Count The Rings

The rings on this ram's horn form each winter when the horn stop growing. The distance between the rings give clues to the quality of the habitat that sheep live in. This ram is in an area where there are no domestic livestock to compete with, and he shows immpressive growth for his age. Rams in Idaho where I live, must compete with overgrazing by livestock and do not grow horns this fast.

Rams lipcurl like this when they check a females readiness to mate. I have also seen them do this when they smell lots of things. Automobile antifreeze, human urine,Ram urine,tree sap and numerous other smells in their environment trigger this response.

This ram stands in lush grass. Habitat like this is essential for healthy bighorn herds. Over grazing and the spread of disease by domestic livestock, limit the areas where bighorns can survive.
